We are proud to present a re-issue of selected Stories About Music in Africa from the Chimurenga Library. Instilled in a handcrafted lidded box this edition, the second volume in the series, contains four stories When You Kill Us, We Rule! by Keziah Jones, The Night Moses Died by Nicole Turner, Dr Satan’s Echo Chamber by Louis Chude-Sokei and Variations on the Beautiful (In the Congolese World of Sounds) by Achille Mbembe. Each box is adorned with one of two cover designs from within the volume’s library, and can be purchased from our online store here.
These stories have moved several times before being treasured in the box of Vol. 2, as most stories do. They move through words, thoughts and different forms of paper (sometimes hundreds if you include drafts). These stories about music in Africa once moved as individual objects in the Chimurenganyana Series – a pavement literature project consisting of serialized monographs expanding on themes developed in Chimurenga’s periodicals. It consists of factions, essays, scores, interviews, liner notes, musical analysis, travel writing, personal impressions, political and social commentary. Plus innovative artwork that illuminates the subversive beauty, electrifying creativity and marvelous diversity from provocative innovators.
