NEW RELEASE! Four Stories About Music in Africa, Volume 1

Introducing Stories About Music in Africa – Vol. I, a limited edition handmade box set featuring four publications from our Chimurenganyana series. Available in four unique designs.

Included in this edition is:
The Making of Mannenberg by John Edwin Mason, inviting us into the meaningful journey of Dollar Brand’s legendary song ‘Mannenberg’. A song which when produced in 1974 by the ensemble would not have seen the striking political energy the track would imbue.

A Silent Way: Routes of South African Jazz, 1946-1978 by Julian Jonker, follow the writer as he scripts the passages of historizing Jazz in South Africa. The troubles, the semblances, the can’t-forget names, the knowns and all the still have to find-outs. Jonker’s poetic piece deals with the emotions we would rather not say and the stories we would rather not look at, but we must feel.

52 Niggers by Stacy Hardy a word-sound investigation of unjustly neglected African-American composer Julius Eastman’s caged negratas. In the semi-biographic piece, Hardy gives an intense telling of Eastman’s life, touching on the incredible philosophical underpinnings and political power of his work.

Thinking of Brenda by Njabulo Ndebele. An ode to the iconic singer which Ndebele narrates through his experience growing up with sounds of Brenda Fassie and other sonic influences of the ‘undemocratic’ 80s and 90s of South Africa.
