CHIMU TAPESTRIES – A NINEVITES COLLAB

We are honoured to present the debut of a limited-edition series of handwoven wool tapestries. Designed by Chimurenga and produced by the design studio + collaborative platform The Ninevites.

Handwoven, wool

Weaving radical publishing and crafted design, the collection reimagines covers of Chimurenga’s selected publications, beginning with two editions published almost two decades apart: “We’re All Nigerian!” (2005), a wraparound maximalist collage of Black World beauty and struggle, and, “Imagination Nwar” (2021), a Dogon-influenced creation by Guadeloupean musician and philosopher Gerard Lockel.

Founder of The Ninevites, Nkuli Mlangeni-Berg, reflects on the collaboration: “For my masters research project, I explored how community, culture, gathering and spirituality have always been at the centre of endurance for Black people. It is an acknowledgement of the contributions that Black people have made towards humanity through creativity, literature, style, activism and other forms of expression. Chimurenga is a true representation of the contributions that Black people have made towards humanity through creativity, literature, style, activism and other forms of expression. I appreciate the way in which Chimurenga represents the continent on a global scale, working collaboratively with other creators and in community. It has always been a big source of inspiration for the work I do with The Ninevites. I aspire for The Ninevites to play a similar role within the craft and design space. The selected covers are some of my favourites and I wanted to reimagine them as beautifully crafted tapestries.”

Woven from hand-dyed wool and mohair, and produced in limited quantities through pre-order, these tapestries invite collectors, readers, and dreamers to hold these radical texts in varied ways.
