LA BIBLIOTHEQUE MUDIMBE – DAY 3: FRIDAY 23 OCTOBER 2026

Les Corps glorieux des mots et des êtres

In today’s session we look into the histories of words and bodies in Zaire and Congo. During Mobutu’s ‘Authenticité’, names of people, cities and landmarks were changed from the colonial to words of the local Congolese dialect, shifting the practice of vocabulary and identity. This shift was set in a terrain majorly influenced by Christianity and the monastic pedagogy complicating the forced recourse to tradition.
